July Update
almost 9 years ago – Wed, Jul 08, 2015 at 01:26:22 AM

Hey Folks!

Just wanted to drop a line to let everyone know where we are. I was hoping to have everything available by Gencon but at this point that would put undue pressure on our editor and layout artist and basically just lead to mistakes so I'm avoiding that. We're still talking PDF availability in a matter of weeks though, not months! I expect all physical products to ship within the next 2-3 months depending on how long printing ends up taking but rest assured it will be as quickly as possible. I'm going to pay for fulfillment from our printer so the books get to you quicker and I don't end up being a bottleneck during pick/pack and shipping. Besides, a little more time means I can draw a few more monster portraits and include them in the final book!

Here's some of the most recent art additions!

Check out these borders that will grace each page! Claudia is also creating a number of separators and rulers for the the book, all hand drawn! All the roughs I've seen looks amazing!

The 'cover' to the monster manual section. Monsters are directly convertible from Dungeon World so instead of rehashing standard monsters Brie Sheldon and I have been hard at work creating amazing creatures based on the legends of other cultures around the world.

Here's one of the half page comics that will detail specific rules throughout the book. This one concerns dying and death tokens.

Schedule update
almost 9 years ago – Tue, Jun 09, 2015 at 05:27:29 AM

Hey everyone!

Wanted to check in and let everyone know how things currently stand. I had hoped to have the actual books printed before Origins the first weekend of June but the editing process has exposed a couple of issues that I really, really want to solve before I release the game. I could rush it and get it out but it won't be the best possible game and I can't have that. Anyway, I'm adding what seems like a lot of time to the schedule but I don't want to have to edge a timeline and then force another delay - I want to get the game to you but I want it to be the best possible game I can provide.

So what's the updated timeline then? I will have the books shipping to you before GenCon 2015, which happens the weekend of July 30th. The PDF will be available a few weeks before the books start shipping. GenCon will be the premiere of book and those who didn't get in on the kickstarter or pre-order will be able to get a copy at the IGDN booth. I will also be setting up a system for backers to pick up their goods at the IGDN game room if they so choose.

Alright, so what are those issues I talked about earlier? Well first there are sections in the book that rely entirely too much on folks having played Dungeon World before in order to fully understand them and I don't want that. The questions from a number of backers and pre-order folks have taught me that this game has a reach far outside the Dungeon World and Apocalypse World communities of play. I have to be very conscious of this and expand a few sections to make sure they are understandable to everyone.

Second, the Basic Moves section is getting a major revamp. Originally the system didn't have any basic moves but that almost always lead to confusion at the table. So I put the basic moves in from Dungeon World and they've worked fine but they've never been 100%. There have always been bits and pieces of them that didn't feel like something a kobold would do. So I've re-written the entire set and I'll be releasing them in the next few days for folks to have a look at and play around with. This exercise has actually provided one of my favorite moves I've ever written, it's the replacement for Spout Lore - a wholly un-Kobold like move in my estimation.

Tribal Knowledge

When you attempt to explain the unknown roll+Ingenuity and retell the stories of your village. On a 10+ There is a story that explains exactly this, tell it. On a 7-9 There are a few hints or legends, what are they?

This sounds a lot more like a kobold, right? It reflects the way that Spout Lore almost always got used at the tables I've ran and I think it more accurately represents what it is to be a kobold.

Anyway, again, I'm really sorry about the delay but I honestly believe you'll be getting a much better product thanks to it.

Oh, P.S.

Art and layout are still progressing at a clip. Here's an early version of the handdrawn border art that will grace every page of the book! It's by Claudia Cangini!
